Where it began
Relationship anarchy was named in 2006 by Swedish writer and activist Andie Nordgren, drawing on anarchist ideas — anti-hierarchy, mutual aid, autonomy. Her short instructional manifesto, translated in 2012 from the Swedish “Relationsanarki i 8 punkter” (Relationship Anarchy in 8 Points), became the movement’s founding text.

The core moves
Love is abundant. The manifesto’s first premise: you can love more than one person, and loving one does not subtract from another. Scarcity is a story, not a law.
Don’t rank. Cherish each connection for itself; no one has to be named “primary” for a relationship to be real. A friendship can carry as much weight as a marriage if that’s what the two people build.
Design your own commitments. Start from a blank page. Be explicit about what you actually want with each person — instead of inheriting a script that says romance must look one specific way, escalate one specific direction, and owe one specific set of duties.
Spontaneity and freedom. Relationships organised around a wish to meet and explore each other, Nordgren writes — not around obligation, fear, or a sense of burdened “shoulds.”
Often misread
Relationship anarchy isn’t a synonym for “no commitment” or “no rules.” It’s the opposite of no: it asks for commitments and rules so deliberate that you have to actually choose them, name them, and mean them — rather than absorbing defaults you never agreed to. It is also not the same as polyamory; an RA relationship can be exclusive. What it rejects is amatonormativity — the assumption that a central romantic pairing is the goal of every life.
